The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy has released statistics detailing the number of Canadians that declared personal bankruptcy or filed a consumer proposal, and for first time in history, there were more than 100,000 filings during 2005 across Canada.

For Kitchener, Ontario, in 2005, despite having one of the strongest economies, there were still 1,058 individuals that obtained a financial fresh start by declaring personal bankruptcy or filing a consumer proposal. Specifically, 807 individuals filed a personal bankruptcy and 251 filed a consumer proposal in Kitchener-Waterloo.
